COLUMBIA - Two blessing boxes were unveiled in Columbia on Monday.

The two additional boxes brings the total to five boxes in Columbia and 10 across Mid-Missouri.

The boxes contain non-perishable food items such as canned goods and rice. People can also find toiletry items in them.

Pastor James Gray, an organizer for the blessing boxes, said he understands there is a great need for them and hopes that they will help bring the community together.

"So, one of the things is to get them up, get people out, and this is how we do some healing," Pastor Gray said. "This is how we bring the community together and this is about making sure everybody in our community is able to eat."

Pastor Gray says that times have been hard for people, especially during the pandemic. He wants people to be able to grab what they need, but also give people the chance to give back.

A volunteer that helps with the blessing boxes, Renee Taylor recognizes that they are helping out communities and people who are sometimes afraid to ask for help. She also said that it has been harder for families to provide meals for their kids with them being home for school.

"I think this is huge for the community," Taylor said. "There's so many people without jobs, so many people that have lost jobs and people are hungry. The kids are home. I have my children home and I know that has put a strain on our budget as well."

A community member, William Linzie, said that the boxes have helped his family and hopes that they help others in the community as well.

"I have kiddos in my home that we are surrogate parents to and so it's really, really helped with the lunches and breakfast," Linzie said. "So here in this area, it will be really helpful for folks to actually continue to help out."

Pastor Gray and volunteers are asking for people to put food and women's sanitary products in the boxes to help the community. He hopes to set up six more blessing boxes within the next six months.
