COLUMBIA - The Columbia City Council will approve the Magnolia Falls Park Improvement Project tonight.

The park is located in southwest Columbia, off of Old Mill Creek Rd.

The improvements to the park include the following:

  • A new playground structure that includes swings, mulch and a new park bench.
  • A small shelter including the placement of 4 picnic tables and the installation of 4 picnic tables and a barbecue grill.
  • A 0.6 mile gravel perimeter trail that surrounds the entirety of the park.
  • Expand the existing pond to allow a sustainable water ecosystem as well as add a soccer goal to the field on the east side of the park.
  • Construct a small parking lot with entrance/exit to Old Mill Creek Rd. This will include 6 standard parking spaces.
  • Concrete walkway by the Forsythia Falls loop
  • Other miscellaneous improvements including park sign installation, bike rack installation, estate fencing installation, turf establishment and tree plantings

The $125,000 project is funded by the 2015 Park Sales Tax, and the proposed improvements are completed through a combination of contract labor and force account labor, or labor in which the contractor is paid for the exact cost of the work.

Melinda Voon is a Magnolia Falls resident and mother of two. She is very happy with the project being approved.

"The next neighborhood over has a playground, but its not as accessible as this one will be" she said.

The improvements are moving forward after two public input meetings were held at Beulah Ralph Elementary School as well as an online survey. Construction is set for Spring 2020 and anticipated to be finished by 2021.
