Motorcyclist tries to avoid arrest by going 135 mph, crashes
MARIES COUNTY - A motorcycle driver with active warrants for his arrest went over 135 mph and later wrecked his motorcycle in Vienna on April 10.
Potosi resident Mark E. Matthews Jr., 31, was transported by helicopter to a local hospital with serious injuries. The Office of Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman released a statement and video on Facebook on Monday that detailed the incident.
The post stated that "Matthews had active warrants for his arrest out of Washington County, Franklin County, and Potosi Police Department."
An officer tried to conduct a traffic stop when he caught Matthews going 71 mph in a 45 mph zone. As the officer approached the motorcycle, he sped off, eventually reaching speeds of over 135 mph.
The officer "reduced his speed for safety reasons, and lost sight of the motorcycle. After traveling a few miles south on Highway 63 deputies located the motorcycle wrecked on the side of the roadway. Deputies rendered first aid, and contacted EMS," according to the Facebook post.
Deputies said Matthews will also face additional felony charges, including resisting arrest and driving while suspended, out of Maries County as a result of the chase.
