JEFFERSON CITY - Rain turning to snow is predicted to cross mid-Missouri late Friday afternoon and evening. Roads in the area may turn snowy and slushy, especially in to the nighttime hours.

KOMU 8 Weathercaster Tim Schmidt said snowfall this time of the year is rare. He said warm road temperatures should help melt any falling snow.

The biggest issue for motorists will be blowing snow and the potential for snow to quickly turn to slush on roadways.

MoDOT crews are planning to monitor the road conditions as the winter weather unfolds.

MoDOT is encouraging drivers to allow extra time for travel and drive with caution. Bridges and overpasses tend to freeze first, so drivers should reduce speed and brake carefully when crossing.

“The calendar may say it’s spring, but Mother Nature isn’t following suit,” said Central District Maintenance Engineer Jason Shafer. “Drivers shouldn’t let their guard down. Snow showers in April can cause just as many problems as they do at other times of the year.”

Schmidt says residents can expect snowfall to end by late Friday evening, however temperatures could drop into the low 20s, potentially causing black ice to form on roadways if left untreated.
